Staff Spotlight

Some of the best students and teachers in Louisiana are right here in Gueydan, and we think they deserve some recognition, so this is our chance to get to know them a little better. This is our GHS Staff Spotlight on our new middle school ELA/Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Cynthia Wirtz!

How long have you been teaching? How long have you been at Gueydan High?

First year teacher and first year at GHS


What was your favorite subject when you were in school?

English and Band


What do you love most about being a Gueydan Bear?

The love our support system and our staff community here are GHS. We really are a family and I felt a part of it from day one.


Who or what inspired you to be a teacher? 

I had always had the desire to be a teacher but put it in the back of my mind for years. Once my friend Ms. Crystal Patin started teaching and I heard her talk about how much she loved it and her experiences during her first year, I decided I should stop waiting and start working to fulfill my dream of becoming a teacher.


What's the farthest you've ever been from home?

The farthest I’ve traveled is New York City.


Do you have any collections? If so, of what?

I collect crystals and books (especially classic literature)


What's your favorite meal?

Any Asian food.


What's something you learned through failure?

I’ve learned that I am stronger than I ever thought I could be.


What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership to me means owning up to your mistakes and learning from them to set the example of growth through our trials and errors.


If you could go back in time to when you were your students' age and give them advice, what would it be?

I would tell them that things will get better and to try to focus on all the positives even if they are only small things.


What's one thing people would never guess about you?

One of my favorite places to be is my deer stand in winter.


Do you have any favorite memories from your time in school?

Meeting my husband in PE class in 9th grade, Choir at Jesse Owens and Band at Midland High.


Could you tell us a little about your family?

I married my high school sweetheart in 2004. We have a daughter who has been with us since 2015 and we adopted in 2017 and a foster son who we hope to adopt also.


What are a few things you couldn't live without?

My family, books, and water.
