GHS Football: A Season of Highs, Lows, and Determination

By: Charlie Thibodeaux

The 2026 Gueydan Bears football season has been a roller coaster ride filled with challenges, adversity, and a few bright spots along the way. From battling injuries to fighting through a difficult schedule, the Bears have continued to compete despite the obstacles they have faced throughout the year.

The season got off to a tough start, as Gueydan dropped its first three games against Berchmans Academy, North Central, and Hanson Memorial. Injuries to several key players, including Brock Breaux, Tate Touchet, and Braylon Mercier, have also made the road more difficult for the Bears. However, the Bears refused to surrender. With injuries forcing several players into new roles, Cameron Elliott and Nathan Leckelt were called upon to step into action earlier than expected. Along with several other junior high players, they were asked to fill important roles and contribute at the varsity level. Their willingness to step up and compete demonstrates the determination and commitment within the Gueydan football program, as younger players have been given valuable opportunities to gain experience and help their teammates.

Despite the injuries and lineup changes, several players have provided much-needed consistency throughout the season. Charlie Thibodeaux, Koen Breaux, and Terry Leopold have been stable presences for the Bears, helping provide leadership and reliability on the field. Tate Guidry has also been a major presence at his position, making important contributions and helping keep the team competitive through the ups and downs of the season. Their consistency has been valuable as the Bears have worked through adversity and continued to compete each week.

Since that victory, the Bears have experienced another difficult stretch and are currently riding a four-game losing streak. Despite the challenges, one player has continued to make headlines across the parish: junior running back Tylan Leopold.

Entering the Week 9 matchup against Elton, Gueydan's own Tylan Leopold continues to be a bright spot for the Bears. Leopold currently leads the parish in rushing with 1,177 yards and 13 touchdowns, despite having played one fewer game than the other leading rushers in the parish. His outstanding production has made him one of the area's top offensive performers and provided the Bears with a consistent playmaker throughout a challenging season.

As the regular season approaches its conclusion, the Bears are looking to finish strong and give their fans something to cheer about. Gueydan will have an opportunity to turn things around during its Homecoming matchup against the Highland Baptist Bears, who enter the contest with an 0-9 record.

Although this season has not unfolded exactly as the team had hoped, the Bears are determined to keep fighting, represent their school, and close out the year on a positive note. It's time to Bear the Standard!
