Some of the best students and teachers in Louisiana are right here in Gueydan, and we think they deserve some recognition, so this is our chance to get to know them a little better. This is our GHS Staff Spotlight on Mrs. Sheri Istre.

How long have you been teaching? How long have you been at Gueydan High?

Teaching for 20 years, this is my 9th year at GHS


What was your favorite subject when you were in school?

English


What do you love most about being a Gueydan Bear?

GHS feels like a big family


Who or what inspired you to be a teacher? 

I worked with teachers in the school board office, and was inspired by their stories of how satisfying a career in education was.


What's the farthest you've ever been from home?

Either the Island of Bermuda around 1986, or Puerto Vallarta Mexico on two vacation trips.


What's your favorite team(s)?

LSU, Saints, St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Team, and of course the Gueydan Bears!!!!


Do you have any collections? If so, of what?

I collect pottery and vintage furniture which I redo and sell


What's your favorite meal?

Anything on a tortilla! I love Mexican food! and Pizza is a close second


What's something you learned through failure?

Keeping a positive attitude can make failure less painful... deal with it and move on!


What does leadership mean to you?

Inspiring others to be the best they can be and a good leader always leads by example


If you could go back in time to when you were your students' age and give them advice, what would it be?

Try to enjoy school. You may not realize it now, but you are making memories that will last a lifetime. You will be talking about your experiences in high school when you are old and grey...get involved in something!


What's one thing people would never guess about you?

I met George and Barbara Bush while working on an Arabian Horse Farm in central Florida.


What are a few things you couldn't live without?

Coffee, Summertime, The Beach, My children and my grandchildren
